Kalm’s brome, also known as Prairie brome, is a cool-season grass native from New England and extending across the northern parts of the mid-west. A bunchgrass with bluish-green leaves, Kalm’s brome usually remains under 3’ tall and grows in full sun in average, sandy, or gravelly soils. Seed heads form in summer with a graceful drooping habit. This species establishes quickly but can be short lived (3-5 years). It is useful while establishing slower-growing perennial species or planted where it can reseed.
